Digitization Technology

We employ state-of-the-art technologies in the capture and production of digital images. This technology features the Kirtas Bookscan APT 1200:

Kirtas Bookscan APT 1200™

The Kirtas APT Bookscan 1200™ is an innovative system that revolutionizes the way in which digital images are produced from bound materials. Using patented technologies initially developed at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), the system was designed to handle the pages of even fragile books with the greatest of care.

Digital Camera
Images are captured with a 16.7 megapixel digital camera that is mounted at the top of the machine. The Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II camera features a full-frame CMOS image sensor that has almost twice the resolution currently considered state-of-the-art by most professionals. Its DIGIC II processor assembles data with precise, natural colors and produces a high quality, low noise image. Optical grade, first surface mirrors reflect the image from the surface of each page to the camera.

SmartCradle™

The SmartCradle™ comprises two independently moving plates that hold the book open to a spine-friendly 110° angle. Using page measurements entered by the operator, the cradle adjusts to the size of the book. Optical sensors continually monitor the height of the left and right pages. As the book is scanned, the left side of the cradle is lowered while the right side is raised, ensuring that the pages on each side of the book remain in the focal plane of the camera.

SureTurn™ Automatic Page Turner
The SureTurn™ Automatic Page Turner is the mechanism that facilitates the machine’s page turning functionality. Synchronized with the camera’s shutter, the robotic arm’s vacuum pickup head gently lifts and turns each page.

Fluffers direct a current of air towards the top and bottom of the pages, separating them so that only one page is turned at a time. Sensors prevent the pickup head from coming in contact with the delicate edges of fragile/brittle books. Vacuum sensitivity can be adjusted by the operator allowing the pickup head to turn the pages of even a telephone book one at a time.
